Sexed Semen

Sexed Semen

Please note: This service is exclusively available at Genetech's U.S. location.

GeneTech is proud to partner with Viagen and ST Genetics to offer advanced sexed semen
technology to our clients. Our mission is to provide cutting-edge reproductive solutions that
maximize breeding success and help you achieve your breeding goals with precision.
Sexed semen technology involves sorting sperm cells into X-bearing (female) and Y-
bearing(male) populations, allowing breeders to select the desired sex of the foal before
conception. One of the most exciting advancements in this field is the use of sexed semen in
conjunction with ICSI.

The semen is processed through a high-speed flow cytometer and sorted based on the amount of
DNA in the sperm cells. However, the sorting procedure is prolonged and has a detrimental
impact on the survival rate of the sperm, resulting in a final volume of 5% from the initial dose.
Consequently, ICSI emerges as the most viable technique for the utilization of sexed semen.
At GeneTech we are ready for this revolution, allowing for greater control over the foal’s gender
and unveiling novel opportunities for horse breeders.

Sexed Semen FAQ:

The process of sexing semen is precise and involves the following steps:

DNA Staining: The sperm are treated with a DNA-binding fluorescent dye, which attaches to theDNA, allowing sperm to be visualized and sorted.

Flow Cytometry: The sperm pass through a flow cytometer that analyzes each sperm cell as it passes through a laser beam. The fluorescence emitted by the stained sperm helps determine whether the sperm is
carrying an X or Y chromosome.

Sorting: The flow cytometer sorts the sperm into two groups:

  • X-Linked Sperm (Female): These sperm contain more DNA and fluoresce brightly.
  • Y-Linked Sperm (Male): These sperm contain less DNA and fluoresce dimly.

This sorting process ensures a 95%accuracy rate for selecting the desired sex of the foal, though it’s important to note that it is not 100% guaranteed.

Gender Selection: Sexed semen allows you to select the foal’s sex, which is especially valuable for performance-focused breeding. For example, breeders may prefer female foals for breeding programs or male foals for competition.

Enhanced Breeding Programs: This technology can improve the efficiency and success of breeding programs, particularly for high-value mares and stallions where producing foals of a specific sex is highly desirable.

Precision in Selective Breeding: By controlling foal gender, breeders can more effectively plan and manage breeding strategies, targeting specific disciplines or desirable traits.

Utilizing sexed semen helps breeders achieve their goals faster while advancing the genetic quality of their herd. This technology enables breeders to:

Mitigate Gender-Specific Genetic Diseases: Some genetic disorders are gender-linked, and sexed semen allows breeders to avoid passing on these conditions.

Optimize Breeding Outcomes: By selecting the optimal gender, breeders can achieve the highest potential for success in their breeding programs

Sexed Semen Fee Schedule:

  • Stallion Set Up Fee: For a new sample submitted for sorting will have a one-time fee of $750.00 USD, which represents the cost and fees associated with
setting the stallion up in the system. This Stallion Set Up Fee is due before the
service can be performed for a new stallion.
  • Semen Processing Fee (SPF): The customer is responsible for the payment of semen processing fee in the amount of $200 per straw with a 5-straw minimum. This processing fee is only due and payable by customer upon determining the sample is viable to perform for ICSI. If the sample submitted is not deemed viable to perform ICSI then this fee is not acquired.
  • Sexed sorted semen produced after November of 2024 currently in inventory will be charged $300 in addition to the normal ICSI charges in the Genetech Animal Reproduction ICSI Contract.
  •  Sexed sorted semen produced prior to November of 2024 that is currently in inventory will NOT be charged the additional $300.
  • Stallion Set Up Fee: For a new sample submitted for sorting the customer and/or other identified party will have a one-time fee of $750.00 USD, which represents the cost and fees associated with setting the stallion up in the system.
  • Semen Processing Fee (SPF): A customer (as defined by stallion station/manager) is responsible for the payment of the semen processing fee in the amount of $1000 to Genetech Animal Reproduction. Upon partners determining if the sample is viable to perform ICSI. If the sample is deemed not viable, then the SPF or the stallion set up fee will be incurred.
